Jane Anna Witherwax/Weatherwax (1816-1888)

Jane Anna Weatherwax b: 8 Mar 1816 in Dutchess co. NY was the daughter of Martinus (Martin) Weatherwax and wife Maria Martin. She married Charles Whitaker abt 1837 in Red Hook NY. They had the following children:

both are buried in Oakdale Cemetery Davenport Scott co. IA.
Their first born daughter Eliza Harrriet eas baptized in St. Pauls Luthern Church Red Hook,Dutchess co NY. No other child appears to have been baptized in the Red Hook area. I have most of the Churchbook records for Dutchess co NY and no where do any other children appear. This is not unusual. The family appears in USC1850 in Red Hook surname is listed as WITAKER there. It appears they migrated to Iowa between 1855-1863. They appear in USC 1870-1880 in Davenport Scott co IA.

Melvin was the son of Clifford H. Weatherwax (1879-1958) and wife Anna L. Arndt. Born 6 Jan 1907 in Des Lac, ND. He married first to Emma Bertha Handt on 19 Nov 1927 in Mitchell co. IA. They had one child a daughter Arlene Mildred Weatherwax b: 18 Apr 1928. Emma died 9 Aug 1928 and their daughter was raised by her mother Augusta Handt. Ref: USC1930 Floyd,IA). Melvin married second to Ruby L. Brandeau on 16 Nov 1933 in Charles city Floyd,IA. They hadthree children

Melvin d: Aug 1981 in Rockford,Floyd IA, He is buried in Nora Springs,IA

Thanks to the efforts of Linda Wilbur my cousin in Michigan a correction can be made to the family of Alexander A. Weatherwax and wife Ruth Sterns. Located on page 222 of my book.
Listed as #1247 is Catherine or Cates Weatherwax b: 26 May 1821. This is an error she did not exist.
What should be included is the following.
Coles G. Weatherwax or Witherwax b: 26 May 1821
Source of correction are photo copies of actual Alexander A. Weatherwax Bible pages (pg 679). It is not confirmed if he was born in NY or MI. His mother Ruth Sterns died when he was 9 months old in 1822 in MI.
Coles would marry a Margaret L. Cheyeman (Cheeseman) c1842. They had five known children.

2. Josiah S. Witherwax 1844-1859
3. Margaret M. Witherwax 1847-1870
4. Ephraim B. Witherwax 1850-????; marr:Luella M. Fitch
5. Mary Elizabeth Witherwax 1856-1858

Most of this family are buried in Wurtemburg Cemetery Rhinebeck,Dutchess co NY. Also known as St. Pauls Lutheran Church Cemetery. Note that most of the family died between1858-1859.
 The two children Margaret and Ephraim lived longer.
Coles is found living with his inlaws,in the household of Cole Cheyeman in USC1850 in the village of Clinton,Dutchess co NY. I have not been able to locate him in any other USC. By 1877 his son Ephraim has moved on to the SD and IA area where his son James W. Weatherwax was b: 7 Dec 1877.
I have located two extracts of letters of Administration that name Coles  one dated 1856 and the other dated 1859. I will have to look up these documents to see what is contained in them.
I had previously found Coles and his family but could not confirm his parentage until Linda Wilbur
indicated that we both had miss read the Bible pages in our research. So in the next edition of The Weatherwax Genealogy this correction and any additional information will appear.

Weatherwax reunion 2013. Some have asked me about a Reunion for Weatherwax's in 2013. In the past we have held these in NY State in various locations. Usually set up as a family picnic in area parks etc. Some have expressed an interest in holding one in 2013. Currently I am obligated for an appearance in one in July 2013, and I will be at the Palatine National Conference in Albany NY in June 2013. If you are interested let me know and I will obtain a location and information and post it on this page for all to join in.
Usual format has been to rent a site or pavalion in local state park and everyone brings there own picnic lunch and shares family history during the day

Along with the new year brings new research news. The Ancestral land of Andreas Weatherwax (1700-1784) was previously identified by Mr. R. Johnson (deceased)as lying under the Tomhannock Reservoir which is in present day Pittstown,Rensselaer co. NY. Late in December 2012 I was contacted by Christinia Kelly Town Historian for Schaghticoke. She questioned the location cited by Mr. Johnson. We managed finally to link up for a discussion of the issue in early Jan 2013. Additional research is ongoing but research so far seems to indicate that the correct location is not under the Reservoir, but actually in Schaghticoke near the site of the Brookins Family Cemetery.
Previous research efforts with the town historian of Pittstown failed to prove the the reservoir as the location of the 2800 acres mentioned in Andreas's Will  dated 1784. However research using the papers of John Peer Weatherwax and his ancestors clearly indicate the land of Johannes or Hannes Weatherwax's son Alexander was in the area of present day location of the Brookins Family cemetery
in Schaghticoke. Several issues including the changing boundaries of Lansingburgh,Schaghticoke and Troy all seemed to have confused Mr. Johnson's  research. It seems he chose the wrong end of Tomhannock brook of stream. The corrected location agrees with many early records, land deeds,voter listings and othe family  record citations all support Schaghticoke as the proper location. This year I will be working on documenting sources and to confirm a more accurate location of these important family lands.

Based on cemetery data from a small Weatherwax cemetery in New Sharon,Mahaska IA the following is the correction: She was b: 15 Aug 1846 in Peru,Clinton co NY.(based on age at dod), She appears with her parents in USC1850 as Betsey age 3yrs, she does not appear in USC1860. She died 27 Aug 1859 and is buried with other family members in this small 3 grave Weatherwax Cemetery in New Sharon. Corrections/additions to the Find a grave website have been submitted.
Dau: Mary Eleanor Weatherwax #572,pg147
b: c1849 Peru Clinton co NY, She appears with her parents in UC1850 as Eleanor age 1; she appears in USC 1860 in IA with her parents as Mary E. WX age 12. This is the Mary E. Weatherwax who married first Joseph Dieks, then James W. Jones etc. dod or location still unknown.
